The noisy amateur film

Sound has always been part of moving images, be it in the form of an instrumental accompaniment, spoken word, or as a soundtrack on the film itself. As part of its mission to collect neglected filmforms, and especially amateur films, the Lichtspiel is organising an international symposium on sound in amateur filmmaking.

Archivists, researchers, filmmakers, musicians, conservators and a wider public will try to investigate how the amateur filmmaker used sound. What were the technical challenges encountered during recording and reproduction? Which techniques and technologies worked best? How did amateurs approach sound from an asthetic perspective? What does all this tell us about the amateur filmmakers‘ practices?

The event opens with a one day workshop on May 18th, 2017, during which we will test the extensive collection of amateur film and sound equipment at the Lichtspiel and will try to produce a soundtrack together. This will be followed by a two day symposium, where we will hear, see, and rave about the ingenious ways amateurs adapted their machines and made their films shine in the ears of his/her audience. Public screenings in the evenings accompany the symposium, which closes on May 20th.
